The European Commission is investigating Google for potentially using web publishers’ content and YouTube uploads to develop its artificial intelligence services, possibly disadvantaging rival AI developers.
Regulators are looking into Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode features, which generate summaries directly on Search, to see if they are based on web publishers’ content without appropriate compensation.
The probe will also cover whether Google uses content uploaded on YouTube to train its AI models without compensating creators, potentially reinforcing Google’s market power.
Executive Vice-President Teresa Ribera emphasized the importance of fair terms for publishers and content creators in the investigation into Google’s practices.
