Disney’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash” had a lukewarm opening weekend, bringing in $88 million domestically, falling short of expectations. Internationally, the film collected $257 million, totaling an estimated $345 million globally.

The film faced challenges like its lengthy runtime and lack of technological innovation compared to previous Avatar films. Despite this, the franchise has a history of long box office runs.

Premium large-format ticket sales aided the film, with 66% of the weekend total coming from 3D and premium theaters. While 3D films are less popular domestically, they remain a hit internationally, especially in China.

“Avatar: The Way of Water” had a stronger opening weekend in 2022, grossing $134 million domestically during the same three-day period. The film ran for 23 weeks and has grossed $2.3 billion globally.
