Researchers at the Marine Biological Laboratory are studying how memory works in the brain, focusing on the hippocampus. Using NVIDIA RTX GPUs and HP Z Workstations, they are visualizing massive datasets to understand memory at a molecular level, which could help prevent neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia.
The team is analyzing protein markers in the hippocampus, which make up only about 1% of all protein markers. With the help of NVIDIA and HP technologies, they captured 10 terabytes of volumetric data and are examining the correlation between protein structure and memory function.
By using syGlass on HP Z6 workstations with NVIDIA RTX GPUs, the researchers turned their project into an interactive scientific exploration. They engaged high-school interns to analyze memory proteins using VR headsets, sparking interest in scientific research and potentially expanding research opportunities for students in the future.
