Elon Musk’s AI startup xAI has purchased a third building to expand its infrastructure, aiming to increase training capacity to nearly 2 gigawatts of compute power. This move is part of xAI’s efforts to compete with industry leaders like OpenAI by training more advanced models on their supercomputer cluster called Colossus in Memphis, Tennessee.

The new building, named MACROHARDRR, is part of xAI’s plan to expand Colossus to house at least 1 million graphics processing units. The data center is set to be operational by 2026, located near a natural gas power plant and other power sources in the area.

Despite the expansion, environmental activists have criticized the move, citing the significant energy consumption of data centers. xAI has not yet responded to requests for comment on the expansion and its environmental impact.
