Nissan has started producing the third generation Nissan Leaf at its Sunderland, UK, plant with a GBP450m investment. The new Leaf embodies Nissan’s EV innovation and marks the beginning of their EV36Zero vision. The Sunderland plant has been transformed with new technology and processes to support Leaf production.
The UK government praises Nissan’s investment in Sunderland, calling it a major commitment to the region. A new AESC gigafactory near the plant will supply advanced batteries for the new Leaf, driving the electrification of the British car industry. This investment creates valuable employment opportunities in green jobs for the community.
The Nissan Sunderland plant, which has produced 282,704 Leafs since 2013, will follow up with an all-electric Nissan Juke next year. Nissan’s UK operations support 7,000 jobs and an estimated 30,000 jobs in its wider UK supply chain. Engineers at Nissan Technical Centre Europe played a significant role in shaping the new Leaf’s design and technology.
