A new malware dubbed “Stealka” targets crypto wallets and browser extensions by disguising itself as game cheats and mods, according to cybersecurity firm Kaspersky. Attackers have used this malware to hijack accounts, steal cryptocurrency, and install crypto miners on victims’ computers. The malicious software has been distributed through legitimate platforms like GitHub and SourceForge.

The malware is dangerous because it targets data from browsers built on the Chromium and Gecko engines, putting over 100 different browsers at risk. It primarily targets autofill data, including sign-in credentials and payment card details, as well as the settings and databases of 115 browser extensions for crypto wallets, password managers, and 2FA services.

To stay protected, Kaspersky recommends using reliable antivirus software and password managers, avoiding storing passwords in browsers, and steering clear of pirated software and unofficial game mods. Cloudflare recently reported that over 5% of all emails sent worldwide contain malicious content, with more than half containing phishing links and a quarter of HTML attachments being malicious.
