Amazon is closing most Amazon Go and Fresh stores to focus on food delivery and Whole Foods Market. Some stores will become Whole Foods locations. The company is cutting 16,000 corporate jobs for the second time in three months, citing changes in priorities. It plans to open over 100 new Whole Foods stores.
Since Amazon’s purchase of Whole Foods in 2017, sales have grown by over 40%. The company will open more than 100 new Whole Foods Market stores in the coming years. Amazon is also expanding online grocery delivery to more locations this year, based on positive customer feedback from over 5,000 U.S. cities.
Amazon will close Amazon Go and Fresh stores, with exceptions in California, as it refocuses on Whole Foods and online delivery. The company plans to open more “supercenter” locations that will carry groceries and expand same-day delivery services based on customer demand. Amazon is emphasizing innovation and technology in its operations.
