Amazon has decided to close most of its Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go grocery stores to focus on delivery services and expanding its Whole Foods footprint. The company’s branded grocery stores did not meet expectations, prompting a shift in strategy. CEO Andy Jassy revealed Amazon’s grocery business has surpassed $100 billion in sales, making it a top three grocer in the U.S.

Amazon will assess converting some locations into Whole Foods stores as it plans to open more than 100 new stores, including smaller-format Daily Shop outlets. The company currently operates over 550 Whole Foods locations. It is also expanding same-day perishable delivery to over 5,000 U.S. cities, with further growth expected in 2026.
