Ilya Lichtenstein, responsible for a major Bitcoin theft, has been released from prison after serving just over a year of his five-year sentence. This was made possible by the First Step Act signed by former President Trump in 2018. His wife, Heather Morgan, also received an 18-month sentence in connection with the crime.

Lichtenstein and Morgan were arrested in 2022 following a federal investigation into the 2016 hack of Bitfinex. Lichtenstein admitted to hacking the exchange and laundering Bitcoin, taking full responsibility for the crime to protect his wife. The US government has requested impact statements from victims of the hack for possible reimbursement.

Former President Trump has expressed interest in reviewing the case of Samourai Wallet co-founder Keonne Rodriguez for a potential pardon. This comes after Trump granted clemency to Ross Ulbricht and Binance founder Changpeng Zhao. Trump’s willingness to review Rodriguez’s case signals a potential consideration for a pardon.
