Chinese automaker BYD Auto surpassed US automaker Tesla as the world’s largest producer of light battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in 2025, with a 25% increase in production to 2,221,913 units. BYD sold a total of 4,602,536 vehicles globally last year, including 2,256,714 light BEVs and 2,288,709 light plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs).

BYD’s production surge was fueled by the success of new models like the Song and Qin PHEVs and Atto 3 and Seagull BEVs, helping the company overtake China’s largest vehicle producer, SAIC Motor. On the other hand, Tesla’s BEV production dropped by almost 9% last year to 1,636,129 units, facing challenges in key markets due to CEO Elon Musk’s political stance and competition from Chinese automakers.
