French supermarket Carrefour is set to enter the Ethiopian market through a franchise and supply partnership with Queens Supermarket, a subsidiary of Midroc Investment Group. The move is part of Carrefour’s 2026 strategic plan to expand into ten new countries through franchising. The agreement includes rebranding existing stores and opening 17 additional outlets by 2028.
Carrefour plans to support the transformation of Queens Supermarket’s store network in Ethiopia, with the first rebranded outlets expected to open in the first half of 2026. The partnership aims to offer Ethiopian consumers high-quality, affordable products and a satisfying shopping experience. Carrefour’s international franchise expansion strategy has already surpassed 3,000 franchised stores.
In November 2025, the Saadé family acquired a 4% stake in Carrefour, becoming a key shareholder. Carrefour recently ceased operations in Kuwait as part of its strategic withdrawal from four Middle Eastern markets. The collaboration with Midroc Investment Group in Ethiopia represents a significant step in Carrefour’s international expansion strategy.
