Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) has commenced operations at the residue upgradation facility (RUF) at its Visakh Refinery in Andhra Pradesh, with a capacity of 3.55 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) and LC-Max technology converting 93% of low-value oils into high-value products.
India’s first residue hydrocracking unit and global deployment of LC-Max technology at scale enhance the refinery’s distillate yield by up to 10%, boosting gross refining margins and reducing reliance on imported fuels for HPCL.
Visakh Refinery’s modernisation project raised its Nelson Complexity Index to 11.6, with Engineers India (EIL) as project management consultant and Larsen & Toubro as engineering, procurement, and construction contractor.
HPCL’s agreement with an ADNOC Gas subsidiary for 500,000tpa of liquefied natural gas over ten years in August 2020 aligns with India’s energy needs, marking another step in the company’s strategic growth and modernization efforts.
