Oglethorpe Power has selected Kiewit Corp. as the lead contractor for a new 1,425-MW natural gas-fired power plant in Georgia. Construction is set to begin soon, with commercial operation planned for 2029. The facility will utilize GE Vernova’s advanced gas turbines and air-cooled condensers to reduce water consumption.
This project aims to support long-term energy demand growth in Georgia, serving 38 member cooperatives. The new power plant, located in Monroe County, is expected to bring economic benefits, including job creation and tax revenues for local schools and county services. The facility will provide reliable power while aligning with cooperative principles.
TIC, a subsidiary of Kiewit, has a proven track record in delivering complex power projects safely, on schedule, and within budget. The company expects the peak construction of the Smarr project to involve about 1,200 workers. Oglethorpe Power is investing in new technologies and resources to meet the state’s growing energy demand and enhance its asset portfolio.
Oglethorpe Power is focusing on building natural gas capacity to meet rising energy demands and improve the resiliency of its asset portfolio. The co-op plans to hire around 30 permanent positions for operations, maintenance, and administration at the new power plant. With $16 billion in assets, Oglethorpe Power serves approximately 4.7 million Georgia customers through its member cooperatives.
