The Province of Ontario selects Canada Nickel’s Crawford Nickel Project under the new 1P1P framework to streamline mining project permitting. The project, 100% owned by Canada Nickel, aims to promote a low-carbon mining and clean metals manufacturing corridor in northeastern Ontario, creating jobs and economic growth within the province.
The project is designed for a mine ore production capacity of 240,000 tpd and projected to operate for approximately 41 years. Canada Nickel reaffirms its commitment to indigenous nations and environmental standards despite the streamlined permitting process. The project aims to align with Canada’s modernized regulatory framework and has been referred to the federal Major Projects Office.
Ontario Minister of Energy and Mines Stephen Lecce praises the project for creating 4,000 jobs and reducing China’s critical mineral dominance. The Crawford Nickel Project is expected to become one of the largest nickel-sulphide projects in the Western world, generating over C$70bn in GDP and supporting thousands of direct and indirect jobs. The project aims to incorporate carbon storage technology to potentially become the world’s first net-zero-carbon nickel mine.
