The national average savings account rate is not the best you can get. Look for high-yield savings accounts offering much higher annual percentage yields (APY). Many online banks offer rates above the national average of 0.62% APY, with the best high-yield accounts paying around 4% APY. Bankrate surveys over 500 institutions weekly to provide accurate data. Connecting a savings account to a checking account can earn you a higher yield, known as a relationship rate. For example, U.S. Bank offers 0.05% APY on a standard savings account, but up to 2.50% APY with qualifying accounts. Online banks can offer around 4% APY. Check current rates before deciding.
