Major automakers support Trump administration’s plan to reduce fuel economy standards but call for changes to credit trading and vehicle reclassification. The proposed revisions include eliminating credit trading by 2028 and reclassifying vehicles as cars instead of trucks. Automakers want to continue credits for air conditioning efficiency and other technologies. NHTSA plans to decrease 2022 fuel economy standards and gradually increase them by 0.25% to 0.5% annually through 2031. The proposed rule could reduce vehicle costs by $930 but increase fuel consumption by 100 billion gallons by 2050, costing Americans up to $185 billion and raising carbon dioxide emissions by 5%.
