New research from the Human Rights Campaign shows a sharp decline in Fortune 500 companies disclosing diversity, equity, and inclusion practices. Participation in the 2026 Corporate Equality Index dropped by 65%, from 377 companies in 2025 to just 131 in 2026, with many holding federal contracts. Of 1,450 companies, 534 earned a perfect score of 100, representing nearly 6 million U.S. employees.

HRC’s index, established in 2002, rates companies based on social responsibility and workplace equity. Over the past two years, a conservative movement led by the White House has targeted the index, causing more companies to withdraw. Major companies like Tractor Supply, Walmart, Ford, and Lowe’s have exited the index, with Walmart engaging in conversations with conservative activist Robby Starbuck before pulling out. This contrasts with previous years when companies like Ford and Walmart publicly supported DEI initiatives.
