Smurfit Westrock is permanently closing a paper machine at its La Tuque mill in Quebec, Canada, due to scale and cost challenges, resulting in the loss of around 30 jobs. The company will also shut down an extrusion facility at Pointe-aux-Trembles, affecting 60 roles, with support measures provided for affected staff.
The closures are part of Smurfit Westrock’s effort to focus its SBS operations and maintain competitiveness. The company returned to profit in Q3 2025, posting net income of $245m, a significant improvement from the previous year’s $150m loss. Despite this, the company revised its full-year outlook downward due to scheduled downtime.
