Authorities in South Korea are investigating the disappearance of 22 Bitcoin, worth $1.5 million, from a cold wallet at a Seoul police station. This loss comes after a separate incident where 320 BTC, valued at $21.3 million, went missing due to a phishing attack. The cases raise concerns about digital asset management.
A nationwide audit revealed the missing Bitcoin from the Gangnam Police Station. The tokens were voluntarily submitted in November 2021 during an investigation, but have since vanished, suspending the case without a resolution. The Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency is investigating the transfer and individuals involved in the incident.
South Korea’s Supreme Court ruled that Bitcoin held on centralized exchanges can be seized by investigators, classifying it as an “object of seizure” under the Criminal Procedure Act. This decision allows authorities to freeze holdings linked to criminal activities, impacting users who store their Bitcoin on exchanges.
