Japan’s exports increased for the sixth consecutive month in March, with total exports rising by 3.9% year-on-year. Shipments to the U.S. increased by 3.1%, while exports to China dropped by 4.8%. The introduction of U.S. tariffs on car and truck imports has raised concerns about Japan’s export-dependent economy.
Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda warned of mounting uncertainty over the impact of Trump’s tariffs on Japan’s economy, citing potential effects on trade activity and financial market volatility. Ueda stated that the bank will closely monitor developments and their implications for the economy in upcoming policy meetings.
Nissan plans to reduce Japanese production of its popular U.S. model, the Rogue SUV, in response to the impact of tariffs on Japanese automakers. Japan saw a trade surplus of 544.1 billion yen in March, surpassing the forecast of 485.3 billion yen. The country is seeking the complete removal of additional tariffs imposed by the U.S.
