In 2024, law firm billing rates rose, but at a slightly slower pace than the previous year. The largest firms charged the highest hourly rates in high-value practice areas, as reported by LexisNexis CounselLink. Partner rates increased by 5.1%, with a significant rate gap between the top 100 firms and the next tier.
Law firms with 750+ lawyers dominated in high-value practice areas like Mergers & Acquisitions and Regulatory & Compliance, which saw median partner rates increase by 12.4% and 8.3% in 2024, respectively. Economic uncertainty and technological changes are pressuring corporate legal departments, according to Pamela Gelfond of LexisNexis CounselLink.
The CounselLink trends report, based on $67 billion in legal spending, revealed that top-tier timekeepers in high-value practices charged exceptionally high rates, with some partners billing over $2,300 per hour in 2024. Large Law increased its market share to 49.3% in 2024, and the adoption of alternative fee arrangements in Employment & Labor matters is on the rise.
The 2025 Trends Report from LexisNexis CounselLink provides benchmark metrics for legal cost management. While some timekeeper rates are increasing significantly, overall matter rates are rising at a slower pace across many practice areas. Strategic management of timekeepers helps legal departments optimize spending while maintaining quality representation.
