Google reported that Britain could benefit from 400 billion pounds from AI-driven growth if the workforce is trained. A pilot scheme showed workers saving 122 hours a year using AI in administrative tasks. Simple steps like training and permission could double adoption, boosting economic growth.

Analysis by Public First found that two-thirds of workers, especially older women from lower socio-economic backgrounds, had never used generative AI at work. Google’s AI Works pilots showed workers saving 122 hours a year using AI in administrative tasks, with barriers like concerns about legitimacy and fairness hindering adoption.

Debbie Weinstein, Google’s EMEA president, noted that workers needed reassurance and permission to use AI in their jobs. Once given a few hours of training, their confidence in using the technology doubled, with continued usage months later. Simple interventions in the pilot studies helped narrow the AI adoption gap.

Initially, only 17% of women over 55 used AI weekly and 9% daily in the pilot studies. Three months later, 56% were using it weekly and 29% daily. These results show the impact of training and confidence-building in increasing AI adoption among participants.
