Michigan State University has launched the Centre for Plastic, Paper and Hybrid Packaging End-of-Life Solutions (C3PS) to tackle plastic waste. With only 5% of plastic recycled, the center aims to develop sustainable packaging solutions. Led by Dr. Muhammad Rabnawaz, the center will focus on recyclable materials and workforce development.
C3PS, backed by the NSF, is the first center dedicated to packaging waste solutions. It aims to advance U.S. competitiveness in packaging innovation. Research will focus on recyclable plastics, biodegradable materials, and improving recycling technologies. The center will also address paper and hybrid paper-plastic packaging challenges.
The center’s objectives include serving industry needs, advancing U.S. competitiveness in packaging, and training professionals in sustainable practices. Led by Dr. Rabnawaz, C3PS will work on material development and waste processing technologies. It seeks to create a circular economy for packaging through recyclable, biodegradable, and reusable materials.
C3PS will involve students from eight universities in research to build a skilled workforce. Experts in materials science, biodegradation, AI, and recycling systems will collaborate. International advisors will ensure global relevance. The center represents a significant shift in packaging research, aiming to be a national hub for innovation in sustainability.
