Chinese textile manufacturers are pausing production due to U.S. tariffs, impacting jobs. Over 10-20 million Chinese workers are involved in U.S.-bound exports. The recent tariff increases have had a significant impact, forcing companies to furlough employees and halt production.
In response to lost U.S. orders, Chinese exporters are turning to livestreaming and new sales strategies to sell domestically. Woodswool, a clothing manufacturer, has shifted to online sales in China via livestreaming, receiving over 30 orders since launching the channel.
Chinese tech companies like Baidu are helping exporters redirect goods to the domestic market through livestreaming e-commerce platforms. Baidu has worked with hundreds of businesses to launch these channels, using virtual human technology to automate interactions with customers and boost sales.
E-commerce companies like JD.com and Meituan are offering support to help Chinese exporters sell domestically. However, the $27.22 billion pledged is just a fraction of China’s exports to the U.S. Companies are facing challenges in adapting products originally intended for U.S. consumers to the Chinese market.
Chinese companies are diversifying production to countries like India and focusing on markets in Europe and Latin America to offset the impact of U.S. tariffs. Some businesses have already built successful trade routes with countries like Brazil and Ghana, expecting minimal impact from China’s tensions with the U.S. 1.
