Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has started building its third semiconductor fabrication facility in Phoenix, Arizona, with a $100bn investment to develop five new plants, totaling $165bn in US investment. The US government provided subsidies under the CHIPS and Science Act, projecting over $200bn economic impact in Arizona over the next decade.

TSMC’s first Arizona fab will use 4nm technology in early 2025, while the second will focus on 2nm tech and nanosheet transistors by 2028. The third facility aims to produce chips using 2nm or more advanced processes by the end of the decade, all featuring cleanrooms twice the size of a typical logic fab.

US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick visited the site, marking a milestone in strengthening domestic manufacturing. TSMC’s chairman and CEO, Dr. C C Wei, emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting America’s leading innovators in smartphones, HPC, and AI, showcasing the progress made in Arizona as part of the largest single foreign direct investment in US history.
