OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s World project, previously Worldcoin, debuts in six US cities, offering a crypto token called Worldcoin (WLD) to verify human identity through The Orb device. Users can create a World ID for platform sign-ins. World also announces a partnership with Visa for a “World Visa card” later this year.
Match Group, owner of popular dating apps like Tinder and Hinge, will pilot World ID verification for its platforms to ensure users interact with real people seeking genuine connections. World also partners with prediction market startup Kalshi and decentralized lending platform Morpho. Altman co-founded the project in 2019 to combat fraud and bots.
Following the announcement, WLD prices surged 15%, but have since dropped over 5%, trading at $1. The token is down over 90% from its March 2024 high of $11.74, according to CoinGecko.
