The average rate on a 30-year mortgage in the U.S. decreased to 6.76% from 6.81% last week, offering relief to home shoppers during the busiest time of the year for the housing market. Borrowing costs on 15-year fixed-rate mortgages also dropped to 5.92% from 5.94% last week.

Factors influencing mortgage rates include global demand for U.S. Treasurys, Federal Reserve interest rate decisions, and bond market expectations for future inflation. Lower mortgage rates boost homebuyers’ purchasing power, benefiting the housing market.

Despite recent volatility, the 10-year Treasury yield was at 4.23% in midday trading Thursday, up from 4.17% late Wednesday. The spike in yields last month was triggered by investor anxiety over the ongoing trade war.
