TikTok plans to invest 1 billion euros in building its first data centre in Finland to store European user data, addressing concerns over Chinese government access. Project Clover aims to invest 12 billion euros over 10 years. TikTok has called bans on the app misguided, stating European data is stored in dedicated enclaves.
TikTok’s first data centre in Norway under Project Clover recently went online. With over 175 million users in Europe, TikTok plans to announce more data centres in the region. Microsoft President Brad Smith highlighted Finland’s appeal for infrastructure building due to its access to carbon-free energy and strong connectivity to serve Europe.
