Nike, Adidas and other footwear giants ask Trump for tariff exemption

America’s largest shoe brands, including Nike, Adidas, Skechers, and Under Armour, are asking President Trump for a tariff reprieve due to “existential threat” posed by reciprocal tariffs. The Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America trade group sent a letter signed by 76 brands, warning of potential closures and low inventory for U.S. consumers.

Trump’s broad tariffs on countries like China, Vietnam, and Cambodia have raised concerns for footwear suppliers. While initial rates have been lowered for some countries, Chinese imports now face an effective tariff rate of 145%. Adidas has warned of higher prices for American consumers, and Nike expects lower current-quarter sales due to global levies.

The U.S. footwear industry is facing tariffs between 150% and 220%, according to the trade group. They stress the need for immediate action to prevent closures and supply chain disruptions. The group also warns that Trump’s tariffs will not bring manufacturing back to the U.S. as promised, as they create uncertainty for businesses investing in sourcing changes.

The White House has not responded to CNBC’s request for comment on the footwear industry’s plea for tariff relief. The trade group’s letter highlights the urgent need for action to prevent closures and supply chain disruptions in the American footwear industry.
