American Airlines debuts new suites with sliding doors

American Airlines is set to debut its new Flagship Suite with sliding doors on some planes in June to attract high-spending customers. The new design, delayed from 2024, will start on Boeing 787-9 planes flying from Chicago to London. A roundtrip in the “Flagship business class” costs $5,342 between Philadelphia and London.

The 787-9 cabin will have 51 Flagship Suites, replacing the current business-class seats. American plans to eliminate international first class on many planes. Rivals like JetBlue and Latam Airlines have also upgraded their premium cabins with sliding doors. Delta Air Lines and United Airlines are rumored to follow suit.

American Airlines is not only introducing new suites but also offering free Wi-Fi to loyalty program members. This move follows Delta’s lead and precedes United’s plan to provide free Wi-Fi this year. The trend of elaborate first- and business-class seats has caused delays in new aircraft deliveries industry-wide.
