Binance founder Changpeng Zhao applied for a pardon from President Trump after denying reports of seeking one. Zhao’s lawyers filed paperwork following discussions of a business deal between Trump’s family and Binance.US. Zhao cited Trump’s pardon of BitMEX founders as motivation. The application was submitted two weeks ago. Zhao pleaded guilty to money laundering in 2023, contributing $50 million to Binance’s $4.3 billion fine. He was also banned from working at Binance and sentenced to four months in prison. A pardon would not erase his conviction but may allow him to assume a role at Binance.US, as per the US Department of Justice. Zhao has no plans to return as Binance CEO, stating the team does not need him. He has taken on advisory roles in Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan post-prison.
