China’s soybean imports hit a 10-year low in April at 6.08 million metric tons, down 29.1% from last year, due to customs delays and late Brazilian shipments. Processing delays have strained China’s oilseed sector, with crushing plants experiencing 20-25 day delays. Dalian soymeal futures dropped as expectations of Brazilian shipments rose.

Soybean arrivals from January to April totaled 23.19 million tons, down 14.6% from last year. Despite expectations of a rebound in May and June, Brazil’s soybean exports are predicted to fall to 12.6 million tons in May. U.S. soybean purchases have declined, with net sales to China at zero for the 2024/25 marketing year.

With a 125% tariff on U.S. soybeans, China’s imports could be halted if no agreement is reached. All eyes are on the upcoming meeting between Chinese and U.S. officials in Switzerland, where progress on trade and potential tariff reductions are expected. The situation remains uncertain amid the ongoing trade war.
