Twangiza Mining has suspended its operations in the DRC’s South Kivu Province under directives from the M23 rebel administration. The company’s general director informed employees of the immediate work stoppage, highlighting tensions over resource control in the region. The rebels’ advance has caused uncertainty for international mining operators and commodity markets.

Manu Birato, the M23 Governor of South Kivu Province, emphasized the need for Twangiza Mining to comply with new tax regulations. He stated that the company had neglected tax obligations, leading to the suspension of operations. The administration is in talks with the company to ensure compliance with the new tax requirements.

The US announced discussions with the DRC for investments in April 2025. Twangiza Mining’s halt in operations stems from a tax dispute with the rebel administration. The company is urged to adapt to the new tax regime and fulfill previously neglected tax obligations to continue operating in the region.
