The Ethereum layer 2 network ZKsync and Matter Labs were hacked on May 13, with scammers spreading false messages about US authorities investigating. ZKsync account warned users not to interact after a fake airdrop link was shared in a phishing scam. The accounts are now back under the team’s control.
Hackers posted a fake statement claiming ZKsync was being probed by the SEC and could face sanctions. Matter Labs confirmed the post was fake. The fake news aimed to crash ZKsync’s token price, which dropped 2% after the breach. ZK token is down 6.4% to trade at around 7 cents.
This is the second hack of ZKsync-controlled platforms in two months. In April, an attacker exploited ZKsync’s airdrop distribution contract, minting 111 million unclaimed ZK tokens worth $5 million. The attacker later returned 90% of the stolen tokens and kept 10% as a bounty.
