Mortgage rates increased for the first time in weeks, with the average rate on the benchmark 30-year fixed mortgage rising to 6.81% from 6.76% last week. The 15-year fixed mortgage rate also climbed to 5.92% from 5.89%. Housing affordability remains a challenge for many Americans looking to buy homes.

A report by the National Association of Realtors and Realtor.com found that while nationwide inventory has increased compared to last year, access to affordable homes remains out of reach for many buyers. NAR senior economist Nadia Evangelou emphasized that increasing the supply of homes is not enough to solve the affordability crisis.
