China has become the top customer for Canadian oil from the Trans Mountain pipeline since it started operating a year ago, shifting crude flows due to the U.S. trade war. Canada exported about 207,000 bpd to China and 173,000 bpd to the U.S. in the same period.

The Trans Mountain pipeline expansion tripled capacity to 890,000 bpd, allowing Canada to export more oil to the Pacific Coast for shipments to Asia. Canada’s exports to countries other than the U.S. rose nearly 60% to 183,000 bpd in 2024, with South Korea, Japan, India, Brunei, and Taiwan also receiving Canadian crude.

Due to Trump’s policies, China has become more attractive to Canadian oil buyers, aiming to diversify away from Russian supplies and U.S. sanctions on countries like Venezuela. The pipeline operator, Trans Mountain Corp, plans to add between 200,000 and 300,000 bpd of capacity to cater to Asia’s increasing demand for stable crude supplies.
