Christy Goldsmith Romero, US CFTC Commissioner, will step down on May 31, leaving three open seats at the financial regulator. Her departure coincides with the expected exit of Commissioner Summer Mersinger, who will join the Blockchain Association as CEO. This shakeup will leave the CFTC with only two Senate-confirmed members.

Lawmakers in Congress are considering draft legislation to establish a digital asset regulatory framework, clarifying the roles of the CFTC and SEC in overseeing and enforcing regulations on cryptocurrencies. Romero, during her time at the CFTC, helped establish the Technology Advisory Committee to address regulatory concerns from the crypto industry and supported efforts against Binance resulting in a $2.7 billion settlement.
