Toyota redesigns 2026 RAV4 SUV to be hybrid-only

From CNBC: 2025-05-20 21:00:00

Toyota Motor announced that the 2026 Toyota RAV4 will only be offered as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid, eliminating the traditional gas engine. Hybrid models have become popular due to better performance and fuel efficiency. Toyota has been a global leader in hybrid adoption, with electrified vehicles accounting for 43.1% of sales in the U.S. in 2024.

David Christ, head of Toyota brand in North America, stated that the decision to offer the RAV4 exclusively as a hybrid was driven by consumer demand. RAV4 hybrids accounted for 44% of sales last year, with plug-in models making up 6.5%. Toyota plans to continue expanding its hybrid offerings, with the RAV4 being the eighth hybrid-only model.

The redesigned 2026 Toyota RAV4 lineup, set to go on sale later this year in the U.S., will feature interior and exterior design changes, as well as performance and technology upgrades. Pricing for the hybrid-only RAV4 models has not been disclosed yet. The RAV4 has steadily increased sales since its launch in 1996.

President Donald Trump’s tariffs of 25% on imported vehicles and auto parts present challenges for the RAV4, which is primarily imported from Canada. Toyota plans to increase RAV4 production in Kentucky to mitigate the impact of tariffs. Despite uncertainties in trade negotiations, Toyota remains committed to meeting consumer demand and maintaining consistency in the industry.
