Canadian mining company Ivanhoe Mines has temporarily suspended operations at the Kakula underground mine in the DRC due to recent seismic activity. The safety of the workforce is the top priority, with no reported injuries. The mine is part of the Kamoa-Kakula copper complex operated by Kamoa Copper.

Seismic disturbances in the eastern section of the Kakula mine led to the halt of underground operations. Senior management and geotechnical experts are conducting a thorough inspection of the affected area. The western section has been deemed safe, with operations set to resume soon.

The mine’s concentrators are currently processing ore from existing stockpiles, which contain approximately 3.8 million tonnes of high and medium-grade ore with an average copper grade of 3.2%. The ongoing evaluation will determine the impact on underground infrastructure like pumping systems.

Mining activities at the Kamoa underground mine and the phase three concentrator, which started commercial production in August 2024, are unaffected by the seismic events at Kakula. Ivanhoe Mines and Zijin Mining Group hold a 39.6% stake each in the Kamoa-Kakula complex, with the DRC Government holding the remaining 20% stake.
