Rio Tinto Group to boost bauxite production at Amrun mine in Queensland; early construction and engineering studies underway. Expansion project aims to nearly double production from Weipa Southern operations by adding 20 million tonnes per year to the current 23 million tonnes.
Anticipated final investment decision in 2026, with first production slated for 2029; project to create over 800 construction jobs and maintain existing jobs. Kangwinan project to replace output from Rio Tinto’s Andoom and Gove mines by the end of the decade.
Rio Tinto’s aluminum value chain heavily relies on the Amrun mine, which was built at a cost of US$1.9 billion and inaugurated in 2018. The company produces aluminum at smelters in Australia and New Zealand and refines bauxite from Weipa at Gladstone.
Early construction projects approved for Kangwinan project include a 250-room camp and access road. Environmental evaluations, regulatory clearances, and cultural heritage consultations needed for progress. The Wik Waya people attach cultural value to Kangwinan.
