President Donald Trump spoke at a private event for investors in his $TRUMP memecoin, using the presidential seal, potentially violating federal law. The event at Trump National Golf Club in Virginia hosted 220 investors. The Justice Department is asked to investigate potential violations of the federal bribery statute and US Constitution.
Bloomberg reported that many attendees at the event were likely foreign nationals, raising concerns about foreign influence. US law prohibits foreign contributions to political campaigns, and the $TRUMP memecoin could allow foreign governments to buy influence without disclosure.
Despite previous skepticism, Trump has embraced crypto with the $TRUMP memecoin. The token peaked at $74.34 before dropping to $14.44. High-profile guests at the event included Tron founder Justin Sun and ex-NBA player Lamar Odom. Sun, a major backer of Trump’s crypto ventures, spoke at the dinner.
