The European Union is set to escalate its probe against Shein for alleged violations of product safety and consumer laws, potentially leading to fines of at least 4% of its annual sales in EU countries. The EU alleges Shein and Temu are liable for unsafe products on their platforms and is investigating whether Shein violates EU consumer protection rules. The EU customs authorities handled 4.6 billion low-value packages bought online in 2024, with 91% coming from China, prompting proposed changes to duty-free treatment for low-value consignments.
