White House AI and crypto czar David Sacks suggests the US could purchase more Bitcoin if funded in a “budget-neutral” way. The government may buy more Bitcoin without adding to national debt or imposing new taxes. The US currently holds around 198,012 Bitcoin, valued at over $21 billion. Sacks notes a potential pathway for the government to acquire more Bitcoin. The US government holds Bitcoin seized from criminal activities, including 69,370 Bitcoin from Silk Road in 2020 and 51,351 Bitcoin in 2022. The US also seized 94,636 Bitcoin from Bitfinex hacker Ilya Lichtenstein in 2022. In January, the US Department of Justice received approval to sell 198,109 Bitcoin.
