Ethereum Foundation restructures, rebrands Protocol team

The Ethereum Foundation restructured its development group, rebranding the core research team and laying off staff. The former Protocol Research & Development team is now “Protocol,” focusing on scaling Ethereum’s base layer, expanding blobspace for rollups, and improving user experience. Longtime core developers like Tim Beiko and Alex Stokes were assigned to focus areas. Some PR&D team members are departing, making Protocol a more united organization.

Ethereum Foundation undergoes leadership and structural changes. Co-founder Vitalik Buterin announced leadership model changes in January, followed by internal criticism and debate. In April, a division between board and executive functions was formalized, with new co-executive directors appointed. The board sets the long-term vision while the executive team handles operations.
