Malikie Innovations sues Marathon Digital and Core Scientific for using Elliptic Curve Cryptography. The firm acquired 32,000 patents from BlackBerry in 2023. Lawsuit claims defendants are using ECC-based methods in Bitcoin mining. Possible six years of lost royalties at stake. Legal experts say individual Bitcoin users unlikely to be affected.
Winning the case could set a precedent for Malikie to target other miners in the US, potentially undermining Bitcoin’s security. Experts believe Malikie may seek fees until patents expire, not tank the industry. Intellectual property lawsuits targeting Bitcoin are not new. Craig Wright previously filed over 100 blockchain-related patents.
Legal experts state that Malikie’s claim may not be strong if patents are expired or cover pre-Bitcoin ECC implementation. Outcome depends on specific patents and court interpretation. Wright’s failed attempts to claim ownership of Bitcoin technology have been ongoing. Bitcoin.org recently reuploaded the white paper after legal disputes with Wright.
