Undergraduate accounting enrollment in the US saw a 12% increase for the spring 2025 semester, adding 29,312 students and totaling 266,507 students. This growth marks the third consecutive semester of rising interest in accounting programs, surpassing the overall growth in business-related courses.
Two-year institutions reported a significant 24% increase in accounting students, totaling 77,936, while four-year institutions experienced an 11% rise, with 188,571 accounting students. Graduate enrollment overall saw a modest 1.5% increase since spring 2024, though data does not specify graduate enrollment by subject area.
A recent student pulse survey by AICPA and FASO found that motivations for pursuing accounting include increased job demand (66%), earning potential (56%), and economic conditions (48%). Around 80% of students attended professional events featuring accounting experts, influencing 62% of students’ choice of major.
AICPA public accounting CEO Susan Coffey noted the positive trend in student interest in accounting, emphasizing the need to raise awareness of accounting career benefits and make the path into accounting more accessible and rewarding. The growth in enrollment underscores the dynamic career opportunities accounting offers.
