US Business Optimism Slumps in ‘Clear Pivot’ From Trump Election

US business optimism has sharply declined, with only 27% of executives confident in the economic outlook for the next 12 months. One in five believe the US is already in a recession, and 34% expect one by the end of the year, with 75% predicting it will be moderate to severe.

The trend towards caution is evident as businesses brace for volatility due to uncertainty around tariffs and global trade relations. Trump’s policies have led to a significant deterioration in confidence, with many businesses delaying hiring, investment, and expansion plans, leading to a slowdown in job growth.

Executives are increasingly concerned about economic conditions, with inflation, costs of supplies, and domestic political leadership topping the list of worries. Revenue growth expectations for the coming year are at their lowest, with many businesses expecting a loss, marking a sharp decline from previous surveys.

The AICPA survey, conducted from May 5 to May 27, polled 328 members working for US companies, including CEOs, CFOs, and controllers. The results reflect a growing sense of caution and uncertainty among business leaders as they navigate a challenging economic landscape.
