United for Respect Education Fund filed a shareholder proposal asking Walmart to undergo a racial equity audit focused on BIPOC communities. Walmart’s 2024 Mid-Year Belonging Report shows people of color make up 51% of its U.S. workforce. Despite unsuccessful past attempts, this year’s proposal received only 6.9% of shareholder votes, down from 15.4% in 2024. Walmart recommended voting against the proposal, citing existing disclosure of people strategies. United for Respect hoped to send a message about Walmart’s DEI decisions. Supporters believe a racial equity audit could address pay equity and employee concerns about advancement and treatment within the company.
