Argentine President Javier Milei did not violate federal ethics laws when he promoted the Libra memecoin in a personal capacity, according to the Anti-Corruption Office. The endorsement led to a $251 million loss for investors and calls for Milei’s impeachment, despite his denial of wrongdoing. LIBRA’s market cap crashed 94% shortly after reaching $4 billion. Milei faces investigation for the scandal.
The Anti-Corruption Office found no public resources were used in Milei’s promotion of Libra. Milei’s X account has been a platform for personal and political expression since 2015. The department stated Milei was exercising his civil and political rights under Argentina’s constitution. Milei vehemently denies promoting the memecoin and claims he was only spreading awareness.
A federal criminal court is investigating Milei’s involvement in the LIBRA token scandal despite the Anti-Corruption Office’s decision. Milei shut down a task force investigating the scandal with no action taken against him or other officials. Critics claim the investigation was inadequate. Data suggests the scandal negatively impacted Milei’s image and national management approval rating, falling from 47.3% to 41.6% after the incident.
