China’s rare earth mineral exports surged 23% in May, hitting a yearly high of 5,864 tonnes. Despite export restrictions, global manufacturing disruptions continue due to shortages. Data on the impact of these curbs is set to be released on 20 June. Magnet exports halved in April, causing production halts.

In the first five months of 2025, rare earth mineral exports from China slightly increased to 24,827t. Meanwhile, the coal industry in China is facing an oversupply issue, with a 42% rise in mine stockpiles and a 25% increase in inventories at northern ports. This oversupply stems from increased production in response to energy shortages in 2021.

Amidst the oversupply issue, China’s thermal power fleet is producing more coal than it can consume. Power plants are urged to purchase coal from northern ports to reduce high stockpile levels and support miners. The country’s rare earth exports are crucial for global manufacturing, despite the challenges faced in the coal industry.
